-Early 90’s, Ljungbyhed, Sweden.
Back then my dad was active in the Entrepreneur-Association in my hometown & one day he brought home a bumper-sticker from their latest campaign. I remember it having these semi-modern stripe-looking graphics, with “Young-by-head” written centered in bold black lettering. To this day I still remember that sticker as being one of the first, if not the first graphically interesting thing I’d ever seen. Not because the particiular design of it was spectacular in any way, or even that nicely executed, but because it to me somehow symbolized the future. For me it wasn’t it’s stripe-like design or the font that stood out. It was the plain message of it saying:
“Young-By-Head”
Not only did it make me think of wordplay: Ljungbyhed -Youngbyhead. It was a bit of a direct/incorrect translation kind of thing. But it also made me wanting to think of titles, skateboard tricks, cool band names, it made me think of summer, fun times, meeting friends & it somehow even brought me hope in ever becoming something of myself.
I’ve though of using that title for something basically my whole life. When I first got the idea I wanted to document my childhood neighbourhood & all the small towns in around the south of Sweden, this title made the most sense to me. I guess it just felt like full circle.
“Young-By-Head” is an ongoing/living/ever-changing photography based project, with it’s starting point in mid 2020.
